s5777 A pair of high, ash, ladderback chairs with rush seats of unusually wide proportions designed by Philip Clissett probably made by Edward Gardiner. This design was used by C R Mackintosh for a house for the Gauld family in 1893. These examples show evidene of having been painted white. s5632 A fine oak Cotswold stool with chamfered and shaped stretcher and through tenon construction, attributed to Gordon Russell, circa 1925, 37cm (14.5in) high.
 

 

srbt600 A rare and fine walnut Cotswold armchair with chamfered lattice back, exposed tenon construction and with original rush seat, after a design by Ernest Gimson, made by Fred Gardiner, stamped 'F P Gardiner Oakbridge'. Gardiner (1890-1963) worked for Gimson and then Peter Waals workshop. 87cm (38in) high.

s5308 A pair of ebonised Sussex armchairs designed by D G Rosetti, made by Morris & Co, with original rush seats, circa 1875. These chairs have the original distressed buttoned velvet covered horsehair squab cushions. The survival of fine original rush on Morris chairs depends on whether or not squab cushions have been used. It is rare to find the original squab cushions. 86cm (34in) high.

s5447 A Liberty’s ‘Athelstan’ armchair in oak with splay arms and drop in original rush seat, circa 1900, illustrated in Liberty’s catalogue 1899. 211cm (83in) high, 114cm (45in) wide, 53cm (21in) deep.

s5361 n imposing oak and ebony inlaid barrel chair with slatted sides and shaped top rail, the outside slats inlaid with stylised long-stemmed flower, the inside and front edge similarly inlaid but also with a geometric motif, attributed to Baillie Scott, circa 1900. 103cm (40.5in) high. .The drop-in upholstered seat has been renewed. The scale of this chair is unusually large. A similar chair appears in Pyghtle Works catalogue as well as in The Studio 1898, for the Grand Duke of Hesse’s Palace in Darmstadt. Baillie Scott designed barrel chairs for various houses in Germany and Switzerland. See M H Baillie Scott and the Arts & Crafts Movement by J D Kornwolf p. 166. The barrel chair form is based on a design by Edward Burne Jones for the William Morris tapestry of ‘Arthur and the Holy Grail’ of 1896 of which Baillie Scott was aware. C R Ashbee’s Guild of Handicraft made the furniture for Baillie Scott’s commissions of this period as well as for the Grand Duke’s Palace, see The Houses and Gardens of M H Baillie Scott by Ian Macdonald-Smith, p90. Attributed maker The Guild of Handicraft.

S5009a A green decorated chair with gilded leaf design to back & stretcher and rush seat, attributed to William Burges and his studio and probably made by J S Chapple, circa 1875, much of the furniture in Castel Coch has similar green decoration. Examples of this chair have appeared stamped Walden who also worked for Burges. Similar illustrated on p34 ‘Truth, Beauty & Design’ by Adrian Tilbrook & Fischer Fine Art Ltd. An upholstered version is shown in a photograph of Burges’ own bedroom at Tower House see p75 ‘Victorian & Edwardian Furniture & Interiors’ by J Cooper. 35ins (89cms) high..
