Toby's work is design led with practicality as the driving force. Over recent months working with daughter Grace the pair have combined pattern and form in a dynamic and exciting way. 'Bird', evolved from last years Phase design, is a cabinet with a softer feel through its more delicate marquetry. Meanwhile Phase has spawned two mirrors and a new bureau which will be introduced at Salone Satellite, Milan in April 2010. The 'Shift' coffee table is the first in a new range. Three of Toby's pieces hold Guild Mark Certificates, from The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and, in January, Toby won the Gane Trust Award from the Society of Designer Craftsmen for excellence in design and craftsmanship. Toby exhibits widely and teaches both in England and the USA, is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and Chairman of the Norfolk Furniture Makers Association.

Woyka was brought up with wood in a family sawmill, and he fondly remembers working in the mill during school holidays. So, after achieving a degree in aeronautics and astronautics, he chose furniture-making as a career. “I chose it,” he says, “for the possibilities it offered me to have complete control over the design and making process, together with the joy of working with wood and people.” His goal is to create pieces that are undeniably beautiful, combining stunning timber with elegant curves and soft, tactile shaping. The challenge he finds endlessly fascinating is to do this without compromising the function of the piece. “In my furniture I use the wonderful resource of our native hardwoods as my palette, often combining them for effect. Oak, ash, elm, cherry, sycamore and chestnut are just some of the woods I use. I don’t really have a favourite, but think of them as my children, loving each one for its own strengths and personality.”

“Yew’r Table” a console table made from a stunning single wide board of yew jointed with secret-mitre dovetails, the drawers are in sycamore, with cedar of Lebanon bottoms and brown oak drawer fronts, height 76cm, width 122cm, depth 41cm.

GUY MALLINSON

To accompany this exhibition we will be showing one or two bowls made by the students of Guy Mallinson’s green woodworking courses. Guy and the woodland workshop were recently featured in the 'wood' episode of the BBC series Mastercraft with Monty Don. This featured some of the techniques covered in the courses and specifically the 'make a chair from a tree' course. This series marks a resurgence in public interest in traditional crafts and will hopefully go some way to promoting all involved in craftsmanship in any form.Guy trained with John Makepeace at Parnham House and the Royal College of Art before running a successful contemporary furniture business in Central London for 15 years. It was here in London that Guy started running evening classes alongside the commission business and this evolved into the courses that he now runs in Dorset.

Between running courses Guy still takes on commissions in green (unseasoned) wood using traditional hand craft techniques - no machines, glue or chemicals. The timber that he uses is locally and personally sourced from sustainably managed woodland. Guy’s "wishbone" stool is made to order and each stool is numbered and signed. Guy’s courses are suitable for all and make a relaxing break from the everyday world. They include bowl carving, totem pole carving, spoon carving, pole, lathing & green woodwork, chair making, basket making, artists’ charcoal making and drawing, primitive pottery, bushcraft and making your own garden gate. Children's courses include green woodwork, bushcraft, "wild child adventure" and "away with the fairies".

Also included in the exhibition are examples of hand blown glass by:

STEVEN NEWELL

Since the early seventies Steven has been designing and creating in glass. Over the years his work has seen the light of day in both usable functional icons such as the Flat Jug, and elaborately worked unique figurative pieces in collections around the world. He was a founder member of one of the first modern glass studios "The Glasshouse" and later set up his own studio in north London where he still works. He is unusual in that he is as happy designing and making work for famous chefs as he is creating great pieces for Museums.

Susan has been a regular exhibitor at the Millinery Works Gallery for 11 years, where she has had several solo and group exhibitions. Susan has always been fascinated by notions of beauty in art. Her work is a response to moments seen in nature; the view at the end of a long hike. Her paintings appear vibrant and spontaneous, but they have a complex composition and a careful construction. The calligraphic brushstrokes convey a sense of the physical process needed to create them. She says a painting is completed when a moment of balance and harmony is attained, amid vigorous movement and intense colour. Susan was born in South Africa, studied Fine Art there and in the USA, and lives and works in north London. Her work is found in public and private collections internationallY.
