“Some images burn a hole in the mind. For me, one has been Roderic Barrett's wood engraving 'Chairs and Men' (collection of the V&A)."
Extract from above
Roderic Barrett was born in Colchester, Essex in 1920 and lived there until his death in 2000. For over 40 years he was one of Britain's leading figurative painters, with a long career as a teacher. His work described as ‘having great beauty of surface and richness of colour’
Leaving school at 15 he went to study at London's Central School of Arts. In William Roberts and Bernard Meninsky, Barrett had two superb draughtsmen teachers. His engraving teacher John Farleigh said "Roderic was the best engraver he had ever known".
When Roderic was 27, he was invited to teach part-time at the Central This was 1947. William Roberts was still there (along with Minton, Vaughan, Heron, Ruskin Spear) and Roderic joined them in the life room.
The exhibition we also hosted the London launch of the beautifully illustrated biography by the author David Buckman which was published by the Chappel Gallery in October 2003.
