Review by Christina Franks - The Hackney Gazette 31 November 2003 War in the World A timely art exhibition dealing with the human impact of war opens at the Millinery Works Gallery next week. A World at War exhibition takes a poignant look at how war affects the lives of those touched by conflict, both at home and abroad. Artist Frances Newman, who used to be a nurse, has created a series of paintings and sculptures that bring home the shocking truth about war at the gallery in Southgate Road, Islington. The War at Home I depicts an all-too-familiar scene in which a refugee woman, already a war casualty, walks past a billboard declaring "war on refugee women". Newman attempts to show the indifference of the passers-by and comment on the wider issue of Britain's ignorance of the plight of such victims. She see art as a weapon of resistance and work of this kind can provoke a more emotional response to war than mass demonstrations or unsympathetic news coverage. The naive quality of Newman's images contrasts strongly with its content which highlight the horror of war more strongly in a world desensitised to similar photographic images. The exhibition runs from next Wednesday to December 21 and entry is free. For more information, contact the Millinery Works Gallery on 020 7359 2019 Work illustrated with review: Fear is the Key
