Steven attended both Kansas City Art Institute and Carnegie-Mellon University, completing his BFA degree in Ceramics & Glass in 1972. The same year he accepted a place at the Royal College of Art, London and completed his MA in glass in 1974.
In 1977 he was awarded his first major international prize for his glass designs, the Coburg Prize.
Steven was a founder member of the Glass House in Covent Garden and has since formed his own companies - Glass House London and Artful Glass. Amongst his many commissions one of the most outstanding is the stained glass window for the head office of Boots in Nottingham. In 2002 he won the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Award.
