Venetian Red - St Marks Etching (Edition of 20) 20 x 29cm 2006
After retiring from full-time work as a City solicitor, Richard had time to edition a selection of his etchings, which were shown publicly for the first time at Vaila Fine Art, Shetland, in 2000. In 2002 he assembled his printing oeuvre together with some sculptures for a retrospective exhibition at the
Millinery Works. In 2003, 2004 and 2006, he exhibited at the Millinery Works British Contemporary Art Show. In 2005 he exhibited in a joint show entitled
"Not Just in Black and
White" at the Millinery Works and subsequently at Vaila Fine Art, Shetland.
The prints in this exhibition comprise three etchings from his Venice Series of six, completed last summer after a visit there in the spring. Hitherto his etchings have been mainly black or sepia, but in this series he is venturing into colour, mainly Venetian red. Each print is from an edition of 20, which are for sale unframed. Most of the works combine intaglio and aquatint, a natural combination for architectural subjects, with intaglio for line and deep shade and aquatint for tone.
All are monochrome, but the delight of the etching process is the huge range between light and shade, enhanced by the vibrant tone created by aquatint.
