THE ARTS & CRAFTS SEAT  

AND THE OCCASIONAL TABLE 

4th to 22nd November 2009

For this exhibition we have selected some of the best examples of seating dating from the 1870s to the 1930s featuring Morris & Co, Liberty, Mouseman, and the Glasgow and Cotswold Schools.

The seats include settles, settees, sofas, arm and side chairs which are shown alongside a range of complementing occasional tables, lighting and pictures.

 

1. S4739 Oak Gothic Revival desk chair with hooped back above leather pad seat on swivel supports in the manner of Charles Bevan, circa 1870

2. s4476 An Ebonised 'Rossetti' armchair with original rush seat by Morris & Co, circa 1875
3. s4675 An ebonised coffee table after a design by E W Godwin, circa 1875
4. s4742 A finely figured walnut two-tier centre table with splayed legs and shaped frieze, after a design by Charles Eastlake, circa 1875

5. s4791 A mahogany centre table, splayed legs and shaped frieze to the stretcher, after a design by Charles Eastlake, circa 1875

6. s4979 An ebonised Morris & Co  Sussex armchair, circa 1875
7. s4989 A walnut two-tier centre table from a design by Charles Eastlake with four turned and splayed legs and shaped frieze and stretchers between, circa 1875
8. s5009 A green decorated chair with gilded leaf design to back and stretcher and with rush seat, attributed to William Burges and his studio and probably made by J S Chapple, circa 1875. Much of the furniture in Castell Coch has similar decoration. Examples of this chair have appeared stamped Walden who also worked for Burges. Similar illustrated on p34 'Truth, Beauty & Design' by Adrian Tilbrook & Fischer Fine Art Ltd.
