9. MARTIN GRIERSON FRSA FCSD FSDC

020 8749 5236

I studied design and cabinet making at London’s Central School of Arts & Crafts followed by 5 years as an assistant to leading architects and designers. This experience has led to a good understanding of buildings, and architects ideas about design. I started the workshop after 15 years practicing as a free-lance designer to the furniture industry. I aim to make proper pieces of furniture that exploit traditional forms of construction but are, nevertheless, expressions of today. I work closely with my clients whose input has a strong influence in helping my creation of a new design for them. I believe the success and beauty of a design lie as much in the quality of detail and choice of materials as in the overall concept.

The Arts and Crafts legacy is as influential now as ever. Chris strives to make beautiful, useful and well-made objects that enrich our everyday lives. 15. Journeyman Furniture - NICHOLAS LANGAN

www.journeymanfurniture.co.uk
07792 741 944

Journeyman, based on the harbour in Hayle, Cornwall, was established by Nicholas Langan to design and make a variety of fine contemporary furniture and interiors to commission bridging styles and trends. The furniture that Nicholas designs and creates does not follow any particular approach, his own style shines through and complements his clients ideas on each project, fusing art, craft and design into something which will in time be loved more than when it was first delivered.

The furniture may acquire motivation from architectural forms or from interesting organic shapes, drawing inspiration from the surroundings in which the article will be set. Nicholas is passionate about the wood that is used in his designs and strives to get the most out of the grain, patterns and texture of the timber paying close attention to the overall form and usefulness of the piece which will ultimately become an antique of the future.

‘Ribbon’ chair – made in solid cherry and stainless steel. This chair is available as a single item or as a set and it can be made in various woods. The chair has an ergonomically correct laminated back rest with exposed joints intersecting the hand sculpted seat which in turn is jointed into the front legs. Height 110cm, width 45cm, depth 40cm.

Graduating from Parnham College in 1977, Tom later worked as senior craftsman in the John Makepeace workshops for ten years. He now works exclusively from his workshop in Somerset, designing and making
contemporary furniture and clocks, in addition to teaching both in Britain and America. Influenced by his love of trees and the natural environment, the strength of his designs and high quality work lie in their simplicity of form and elegance.

Longcase Clock.‘Grace’ is a contemporary evolution of the traditional longcase clock, made from bleached solid oak and burr oak veneer. It is one of a series of contemporary clocks designed by Tom Kealy, in a unique
collaboration with clockmaker Julius Schoonhoven. The eight day movement has a recoil anchor escapement and is spring driven with a fusée. It is regulated by a one second, (Royal), pendulum. Inside the case there are a set of five drawers, using space that the weights would normally occupy, made using limed oak with sycamore sides. Height 210cm, width 60cm, depth 30cm.
