THE MILLINERY WORKS GALLERY

The Arts & Crafts Bedroom: From Glasgow to the Cotswold Style.

A Selling Exhibition 6 - 24 June 2007

No tale I tell
Of ill or well,
But this I say:
Night treadeth on day,
And for worst or best
Right good is rest’.

Taken from lines written by William Morris for an embroidered hanging, designed and worked by his daughter May, for his bed at Kelmscott, 1891.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has
studied the designers of the Arts & Crafts Movement, which had at its very heart the desire to have nothing in the home that was not either useful or beautiful, that when they turned their attention to the furnishing and decoration of the bedroom they would excel, producing works of breathtaking beauty and fine construction.

This exhibition, which concentrates on the furniture designs of the period, is centred around four major suites that illustrate the contrasting styles adopted by the movement’s leading practitioners and supported by individual exhibits that exemplify the commitment to both beauty and simplicity.
