BETTY JOEL

from ARTS & CRAFTS to MODERNISM.

1. A circular extending ‘Armistead’ dining table in Australian walnut with eight removable outer segments edged in English sycamore on a fluted column with linoleum covered base, circa 1932. 76cm (30in) high, 145cm (57in) in diameter. Similar illustrated page 79 ‘The Adventure of British Furniture’ David Joel.

                                     

 

 

 

2. A set of eight English sycamore ‘Cambridge’ armchairs of exposed dowel construction with the backs and seats upholstered in green leatherette, designed by Betty Joel for Token Handmade Furniture, circa 1935. 81.5cm (32in) high. Illustrated 103 ‘The Adventure of British Furniture’ David Joel.

                                            

 

3. A Queensland silky oak ‘Savoy’ lounge chair re-upholstered in modernist cross-stitched woven yellow and black chenille fabric, designed by Betty Joel for the Savoy Hotel Group, circa 1930. 82cm (32in) high, 71cm (28in) wide, 56cm (22in) deep. Illustrated Plate 27 Betty Joel ‘Celtic Spirit of the Orient’ Ray Foulk.

                                               

 

4. A Wellington chest in teak with ebonised handles and secret locking mechanism enclosing five graduated drawers with moulded and chamfered edges and exposed dowel construction, designed by Betty Joel for Betty Joel Ltd, circa 1925. 95cm (37.5in) high, 53.5cm (21in) wide and 43cm (17in) deep.

 

 

 

 

5. A Queensland silky oak asymmetric graduated chest of ten drawers of exposed dowel construction on a macassar ebony plinth with carved sycamore shell handles. The label reads: ‘Token Hand Made Furniture, designed by: Betty Joel, made by: F. Worley at Token Works 1928. Portsmouth’. 140cm (55in) high, 106cm (41.75in) wide, 55cm (21.5in) deep.

 

 

 

 

6. A tall chest in Australian walnut comprising two short above five graduated drawers, designed by Betty Joel for Betty Joel Ltd, circa 1930. 58in (147.5cm) high, 30in (76cm) wide and 21in (53cm) deep.
