At the turn of the 19th century the popularity of the furniture and effects inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement was at its zenith. The demand was so high that a great number of ‘commercial’ firms entered into large scale production to satisfy the market.

Very few of these companies were ever able to produce goods of the high quality of craftsmanship or control of design that the Arts & Crafts Movement sought to champion. A few notable exceptions stand out from these commercial firms.

One such company who produced some exceptional pieces was Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple. A fusion of the latest technologies coupled with a skilled work-force and the strong influence of Baillie Scott and Wylie & Lochhead, whom they also supplied, allowed them to produce some classic pieces. Their Arts & Crafts designs were typified by their bold use of fine inlays, copper repoussé panels and distinctive cut-outs that captured the public imagination.

Following the extensive exhibition held at the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon earlier this year The Millinery Works is pleased to be staging an exhibition, comprising many of the pieces from that exhibition, most of them from the collection of Philip Bowditch, which we feel capture the essence of Shapland &Petter’s distinctive Arts & Crafts designs. We have not produced a catalogue for the event,
however all items are shown on our website.

Our exhibition will also coincide with the London launch of the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon’s and Daryl Bennett’s book Shapland & Petter of Barnstaple, Arts & Crafts Furniture, which will be available at the exhibition and in which many of the items for sale in this exhibition are illustrated.
