The Millinery Works Art Gallery

Whose I is it anyway?
An awareness of autism and art

Illustrated above Carl Jones 'Still Life with Bottles' 1999 collage
Coloured ink on HP paper mounted on unbleached paper 41.5 x 24

The art of Hoffmann de Visme Foundation
work by autistic adults

“Look at these works with a fresh, unprejudiced eye. Among them are pieces reminiscent of accepted masters: the precision of a Patrick Caulfield, the innocence of an Alfred Wallis, the vibrancy of a Philip Sutton and the graphic power of a Käthe Kollwitz.  Between them they generate more electricity and feeling than some established exhibiting societies can produce in a decade”.

David Buckman, Author Dictionary of Artist Working in Britain since 1945.

This exhibition and the production of the accompanying catalogue has been made possible by the generous assistance of many companies and individuals who have given time, advice and contributions to bring it to fruition.

We would especially like to thank the following: Jefferson Smith, Fotoplus, Crouch End; Cante Print, Frances Newman, David Buckman, The Millinery Works Gallery, Mark Kebble, Tony Hibberd, Babushka Wine Bar, Caledonian Road; John Knight, Brodie’s City Bars & Restaurants; Sue Cooper, Triodos Bank; Hilary George, Barrington Publications; Hannalore and Matthew at the day centre, and to Alison Forbes and Ian Wilson of the Foundation for their vision and dedication.

Above artist Theo Attah beside his acclaimed work 'Two Rhinocerii', which he produced in 1994
