Christine-Ann
trained at Harrow School of Art and Technology under Mick
Casson (1971-73) and then worked with David Leach. In London,
she started her own workshop as a member of the Barbican Arts
Group (1975-83) and in 1976 was elected to membership of the
Craftsmen Potters Association and the Society of Designer
Craftsmen.
A study trip to China in 1978 had a radical effect on her work
and way of life. Since then she has pursued studies in Far
Eastern Art and the Chinese language. In 1984 bursaries
allowed her to go back to China for research and now she
returns accompanying art historical tours.
For 25 years Christine-Ann has produced thrown porcelain
vessels fired in an oxidising atmosphere, specialising in
crackle glazes. Her growing interest in Chinese art led to her
considering her ceramics as canvases. Copper-red and green
splash decoration giving way to a more calligraphic vision of
black and white pots. More recently she has also been making
large vitrified earthenware pots for the garden or
conservatory, some incorporating water features.
In 1996 she was awarded a Winston Churchill Traveling
Fellowship to visit Japan to ‘explore the way water is used
in landscape and architecture’. A project award from South
West Arts has enabled her to develop some of the ideas evolved
from this trip Among others,
Christine-Ann’s most
prestigious exhibitions include being selected for the C.P.A.
Members’ Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in
1983 and 1994. She was named ‘Somerset Craftsperson 1997’.
In 1999 large porcelain pieces were commissioned for Sotheby’s
Contemporary Decorative Arts Exhibition.
Christine's
works are in the collections of the V & A and the
Tate Liverpool
