Moyes
- The Smile of Menippus

Inspired by Velązquezs classic 17-century painting of the shadowy figure of Greek philosopher, Menippus, Jim Moyes is to hold his first one-man show at the Millinery Works Gallery in March of this year.
The paintings with their aerial perspective draw out and explore humanity as if seen from the cynical and scornful eye of Menippus as he looked down with bemused derision on every kind of human endeavour.
Moyes's use of the human figure scurrying almost ant like across some of the larger canvases capture in a thoroughly contemporary fashion the cynics view of the futility of humanity's search for meaningful purpose.
Yet the subtlety in Moyes's painting lies in their ability to allow the viewer to look down from the cynics eye whilst simultaneously looking in at the cynic himself.
