.Raul
Speek - A Cuban in Wales

Raul was
born in Guantanamo in 1958 just as the Cuban revolution began.
He came to England after being featured in an ARENA
documentary ‘Havana’ shot on location in Cuba in 1990. His
first solo exhibition here coincided with the transmission of
the programme.
He was
unable at that time to get permission from the Cuban
authorities to come to London as he was in political terms an
‘unofficial’ artist. A year later he did obtain permission
in time for his next British exhibition ‘A Cuban Portrait’
‘A
Cuban in Wales’ explored the fantasy of a ‘melting-pot’
world - a world of vibrancy and colour, of light and form
where rhythm and movement take shape in fluid lines. The drama
and temperament that are part of the artist’s Cuban identity
are juxtaposed with the reflective, dreamlike quality of
Raul’s current home on the Welsh coast.
