The Millinery Works GALLERY
PAST FURNITURE EXHIBITIONS
Betty Joel - Celtic Spirit from the Orient Presented by the Antique Trader and Ray Foulk 21 May to 22 June 1997.
The glamour of the 1930s may have been promoted by Hollywood's silver screen, but it was brought to tangible reality in Britain by furniture designers, decorators and manufacturers, among whom Betty Joel was pre-eminent.
From small beginnings in a Hayling Island workshop, possessing no formal design education, she progressed to splendid Knightsbridge showrooms and a major architect-designed factory in the London suburbs. By 1937 she was the most revered name in bespoke furniture design numbering members of her family amongst her clientele.
