The Millinery Works

History of The Millinery Works continued

During the Second World War the basement of number 87 was fitted with a corrugated steel structure and became the local air raid shelter.

In the 1960s, when hats went out of fashion, Snare & Co closed their business in north London. The properties were split into three and taken over by firms in or connected to the rag trade and the houses at the front were turned back into residences.

The recession of the late 80s took its toll on the business in numbers 85 to 87.

When the present owners found the factory it was in poor repair however, they realised its potential as a show space for the furniture & objects of the British Arts & Crafts Movement in which they specialise. In restoring the buildings they have tried to retain as many of the original features as possible including cast iron columns, parquet and board floors and matchboard walls and ceilings. The furniture is very much at home in the setting of this period building.
