s4863 Simpson of Kendal: a rare and important oak compendium wardrobe comprising a six drawer chest of four
long and two short drawers, below a leaded glazed cabinet surmounted by a shaped
pediment, flanked by two hanging cupboards with inset panelled doors with shaped
moulded carved frieze of leaf design, the side returns also having inset panels
with shaped moulded carved frieze and the right hand side return enclosing a
full length mirror, the handles being bronze patinated copper, the long handles
stamped Rathbone 538L, the heart shaped drawer handles Rathbone 534A. Made for
James and Beatrice Morton on their marriage in 1901. 198cm (78in) high, 230cm
(90.5in) wide, 8.5cm (23in) deep. This piece is mentioned in the Simspsons of
Kendal Craftsmen in Wood 1885-1952 and the records for the bedroom suite are in
the Cumbrian Records Office. The suite was designed by Arthur although the
metalwork is designed by C F A Voysey. James Morton designed carpets for
his family’s firm Morton & Co. and in particular set up the Dunemer carpet
workshops in Ireland. Arthur’s second son Ronald went on to work as a designed
for Morton. |

cornice and mirrored central door flanked by two dowelled
and panelled doors above two drawers all with hammered steel
handles and the whole on six acorn feet, the interior
consisting of three shelves above three drawers in the
centre with matching dressing table and towel rail. Designed
by Ambrose Heal for Heal & Son,
circa 1898.

s4641 A Cotswold style finely figured English walnut compendium wardrobe consisting of two central doors above four graduated drawers flanked by two faceted panelled bow front wardrobes all with exposed dovetail and dowel construction and the drawers and doors cross banded in yew wood and ebony lined on a chamfered arched plinth, the handles and carved feet being in macassar ebony, labelled The Russell Workshops, designed by Gordon Russell, foreman Edgar Turner,
cabinet maker P J Wade, dated 25th April 1929. 168cm (66ins) high, 178cm (70ins) wide and 61cm (24ins) deep.
