A Clissett elm, ladderback, Cotswold armchair

The Millinery Works

Philip Clissett (1817 - 1913) An elm, ladderback, Cotswold armchair, turned finials to the tops of the back supports, the five graduated splats to the ladderback and the arm rests shaped with a draw knife, exposed pegging construction, turned columns to the front supports, tapered legs, turned stretchers, original rush seat, circa 1905, by Philip Clissett, 115cm (45in) high, 60cm (23.5in) wide. The shape of the finials, the pegging through the back uprights from the outside of the chair to secure the rear tenon, the shape of the stretchers, the moulding of the splats and the arm rests are all typical of Clissett's work. Ernest Gimson, Charles Ashbee, Ambrose Heal, Gordon Russell and Charles Voysey all produced variations of the 'Clissett' chair. SOLD
