A set of six, oak, 'Clissett' ladder-back dining chairs by William Birch

The Millinery Works

A set of six, oak, 'Clissett' ladder-back dining chairs, turnings to the supports and to the front legs, original rush seats, by William Birch of High Wycombe and sold at Liberty's, circa 1900, 104cm (41in) max high, seats 46cm (18in). Named after Philip Clissett (1817 - 1913) a chairmaker, the design is by Ernest Gimson who, in 1890, was taught by Clissett how to make ladder-back chairs. By the early C20th there were variations offered by a number of manufacturers; the turned detail and pad feet on the front legs are typical of chairs by William Birch. . SOLD
