Arthur Romney Green (1872 - 1945) trained in Chemistry and Physics at Mason College,Birmingham and taught in South Africa for three years where he started building boats and making furniture. Returning to the UK in 1900, he finally settled in Christchurch, Dorset, in 1919 and opened a workshop. Green was a published poet and social reformer; during the 1930's he ran workshops for the unemployed for the Rural Industries Bureau. He took on, as apprentices, boys with educational difficulties and, during the war, men who had been invalided out of the Armed Forces, many of whom went on to open their own workshops. Green's knowledge of geometry and mathematics often appear in his furniture designs, in this instance in the interlocking repeat element of the cornice.
