Chatterbow

The Millinery Works

jfk51

Chatterbowl, colourful birds, unique hand made, high fired to 1270 degrees centigrade, thrown on the wheel using a dark clay, coated with white slip when leather-hard. This is then scored with a light metal tool in a 'chatter' pattern, held lightly so it 'jumps', taking out little nicks from the surface, revealing darker body clay, 15cm diam. The artist was taught this method on a recent trip to Koishiwara pottery village in Japan, where 'Tobiganna' or chattering is a traditional type of decoration.
